Golden Retriever 300x239 For many years the story went that the Golden Retriever was bred from a troupe of Russian circus dogs.

Pekingese 300x255 The first Pekingese was not exhibited in England until 1894 but thousands of years before that they were sharing the lives of the Chinese Emperors.

english springer spaniel 300x227 The English Springer Spaniel is one of the oldest varieties of Spaniel. It was used to “spring” or “flush” the game for the nets and later for the guns. It is the ideal all round gun dog for the shooting man who only wants to keep one dog.

Toy Poodle This tiny bundle of energy is built on exactly the same lines as the larger Poodle, the only difference being size. First shown at Cruffts as a separate variety in 1958 the Toy has been around for many years and can be seen depicted in paintings at least two hundred years old. Some time ago the breed went through a bad patch when too many were indiscriminately bred and nervous and physical faults were common. Breeders have now overcome this and the modern Toy Poodle is a jaunty little dog with a zest for life.

Shetland sheepdog 300x223 Could best be described as a small edition of the Rough Collie and, in fact, the standard of points differs very little. The Shetland Sheep Dog is actually a miniature working sheepdog from the Shetland Isles where, of course there are also miniature ponies.

Cocker spaniel 300x257 Deservedly popular the “Merry Cocker” bustles through life. Known in Chaucer’s time for their sporting abilities and affectionate natures, it was not until 1873 that the Cocker Spaniel was classified separately. Some still work in field trials but the vast majority are show or companion dogs.

WHWTjpg Closely related to the Cairn and bred from the small terriers of the Scottish Highlands centuries ago, the “Westie” was valued for its courage and tenacity as a vermin killer. Small white dogs similar to the Westie were kept by the Malcolms of Poltalloch in the nineteenth century and called Poltalloch Terriers. When first shown in Edinburgh in 1904 they were renamed West Highland White Terriers. Strongly built little dogs with a varminty look.

whippet 300x220 Resembling a miniture greyhound, graceful and fast – and probably the fastest hound there is for its size, the Whippet was “manufactured” in Northern England in the nineteenth century and used for the cruel sport of rabbit racing. This was banned in 1911 after which racing to the rag took over.

labrador retriever 300x224 The Labrador from Newfoundland, arrived at Poole in the mid-nineteenth century. As much at home in the water as out of it they helped the fishermen to pull in their nets, retrieve fish and other things from the sea.

cairn terrier This small, hardy terrier from the Western Highlands and Islands could well be the tap root from which all the terriers of Scotland can trace their origins.
